An Act to amend the law relating to privacy, and for related purposes

The Parliament of Australia enacts:
1 Short title
This Act may be cited as the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000.
2 Commencement
(1) Subject to this section, this Act commences on the later of the following days (or either of them if they are the same): (a) the first day after the end of the period of 12 months beginning on the day on which this Act receives the Royal Assent; (b) 1 July 2001.
(2) Schedule 3 commences on the day on which this Act receives the Royal Assent.
3 Objects
The main objects of this Act are: (a) to establish a single comprehensive national scheme providing, through codes adopted by private sector organisations and National Privacy Principles, for the appropriate collection, holding, use, correction, disclosure and transfer of personal information by those organisations; and (b) to do so in a way that: (i) meets international concerns and Australia's international obligations relating to privacy; and (ii) recognises individuals' interests in protecting their privacy; and (iii) recognises important human rights and social interests that compete with privacy, including the general desirability of a free flow of information (through the media and otherwise) and the right of business to achieve its objectives efficiently.
