AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.
Boeing 767 Series Aeroplanes
AD/B767/166 Engine Core Cowl Latch Modification 4/2002
Applicability: Boeing 767 series aircraft equipped with General Electric CF6-80C2 series engines; as listed in Boeing Service Bulletin 767-71-0088.
Requirement: 1. Modify the left and right hand core cowl assemblies of the engines per Boeing Service Bulletin 767-71-0088.
2. Do not install aluminium core cowl assembly, part number 224-2301-513 (left hand) or 224-2302-539 (right hand) on any aircraft.
Note: FAA AD 2001-16-07 Amdt 39-12375 refers.
Compliance: 1. Before 24 September 2004.
2. As of 6 months after the effective date of this AD.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 18 April 2002.
Background: This modification alleviates a potential unsafe condition in which an engine fire can lead to opening of the core cowl in flight and its separation with the strut fire barrier from the airplane.
