AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Applicability: Model 767-300 series aeroplanes modified by United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) ST01783AT-D.
Requirement: 1. Modify the in- flight entertainment (IFE) system by installing two new relays and a new circuit breaker, in accordance with TIMCO Service Bulletin TSB-767-23- 009, Revision IR dated 22 August 2001.
2. Revise the procedures under "Electrical Smoke or Fire" in the "Emergency Procedures" section of the aircraft flight manual (AFM) to include TIMCO AFM Supplement TIM-AFM-01035 dated 13 March 2002.
Note 1: When the information in the TIMCO AFM supplement has been incorporated into the FAA approved general revisions of the AFM, the general revisions may be incorporated into the AFM, and the AFM supplement may be removed from the AFM.
3. IFE systems may not be installed on any aeroplane in accordance with STC ST01783AT-D unless the IFE system is modified and the AFM is revised according to this Directive.

Compliance: For Requirement 1 - Within 18 months after the effective date of this Directive.
For Requirement 2 - Concurrent with the accomplishment of Requirement 1. For Requirement 3 - As of the effective Date of this Directive.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 10 July 2003.

Background: This Directive requires the modification of the IFE systems installed under STC ST01783AT-D, together with the revision of the AFM. This action is required to ensure that, when necessary, the flight crew is able to remove power from the IFE and is advised of appropriate procedures to perform these actions. Inability to remove power from the IFE system during a non-normal or emergency situation could result in inability to control smoke or fumes in the aeroplane flight deck or cabin.
