AD/PA-32/17 Amdt 4
Control Wheel - Inspection 11/78
Applicability: All model PA-32 fitted with plastic control wheels as shown in Piper SL 527D. Requirement: Inspection: Remove the Piper medallion from the face of the control wheel (if applicable). Inspect the control wheel hubs for cracks, which may propagate from the edge or bore of the retaining pin hole, using the method details below. If cracks are found the control wheel shall be replaced before further flight.
Inspection Method:
1. Clean the hub with an ordinary detergent and water.
Note: Do not use solvents as these may contain detrimental substances such as acetone.
2. Using an inspection light and at least a X3 magnifying glass, inspect the surface area covered by a band of at least 1/2" width from the top to the bottom of the pin on the front and rear faces of the hub and a similar band across the lower face of the hub.
Note 1: Cracks will show up as black lines under the inspection light. If a line is only a scratch the bottom of the scratch will be visible.
Note 2: The control wheel medallion may be refitted with a regular contact cement - DO NOT use an acetate type adhesive or any other type of plastic cement. (Piper SL 527D refers).
Compliance: Unless previously accomplished, within 25 hours time in service after 30 November 1978 and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 100 hours time in service until replaced in accordance with Piper SL 527D.
