COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY
SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES
SAAB SF340 Series Aeroplanes
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.
AD/SF340/73 Electrical Wiring - Cabin Compartment Ceiling 2/2000
Applicability: Model SF340A aeroplanes, serial number (S/N) 004 through 159 and Model 340B aeroplanes, S/N 160 through 459.
Requirement: Inspect the wiring harness routed through the cabin compartment ceiling, repair (if necessary) and install additional chafe protection in accordance with SAAB Aircraft AB Mandatory Service Bulletin SAAB 340-92-027 dated 10 December 1999.
Note: LFV AD 1-149 refers.
Compliance: Either before 14,000 hours total time in service is accumulated or within 4,000 hours time in service after the effective date of this directive, whichever occurs latest.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 24 February 2000.
Background: The manufacturer has advised of wire chafing occurring in the cabin ceiling area, where the wire passed through a frame lightening hole, which caused a false tailpipe hot warning. The wire chafing could cause other false warning and signal failures.
This directive ensures early detection of chafing and introduces measures designed to minimise the likelihood of further chafing of occurring.

The above AD is notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 27 January 2000.
