AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

AD/SF340/74 Cargo Compartment Fire Detectors 3/2000

Applicability: Model SF340A aeroplanes, serial number (S/N) 004 through 159 and Model 340B aeroplanes, S/N 160 through 459.

Requirement: Replace cargo compartment smoke detectors manufactured by Fenwall with smoke detectors, part number CGAB1201-01, manufactured by Cerberus SA in accordance with SAAB Aircraft AB Mandatory Service Bulletin SAAB 340-26-023 dated 21 December 1999.

Note: LFV AD 1-151 refers.

Compliance: Before 28 December 2001.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 23 March 2000.

Background: The Luftfartsverket, the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration, has advised that field experience has demonstrated that smoke detectors, located in the cargo compartment, manufactured by Fenwall exhibit poor reliability, resulting in false warning occurring during high humidity environmental conditions.

This Directive mandates the replacement of the current cargo compartment smoke detectors with new units that have increased reliability and decreased maintenance.
