COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY
SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.
SAAB SF340 Series Aeroplanes
AD/SF340/82 DC Test Switches 2/2002
Applicability: Model SF340A aeroplanes, serial numbers (S/N) 004 through 159 inclusive and Model 340B aeroplanes S/N 160 through 379 inclusive.
Requirement: Modify the DC electrical over voltage/feeder test circuit in accordance with Saab Aircraft AB Mandatory Service Bulletin SAAB 340-24-023 Revision 2 dated 15 November 2001.
Note: LFV AD 1-169 refers.
Compliance: Within 5000 hours time in service after the effective date of this Directive, but no later than 21 February 2004.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 21 February 2002.
Background: The Swedish Luftfartsverket has advised there have been instances on Saab 340 aeroplanes where, during a lightning strike, the two DC generators have dropped off line. This has required the DC generators to be manually reset to bring them on line, which increases pilot workload. Additionally there have been some instances where manual reset did not appear to correct the malfunction.
This Directive introduces a modification that is intended to make the DC generator system more resistant to lightning strikes.
Eugene Paul Holzapfel
Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority 14 January 2002
The above AD is notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 30 January 2002.
