COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES
Fairchild (Swearingen) SA226 and SA227 Series Aeroplanes
AD/SWSA226/59 Amdt 1
Second Passenger Window Port and Starboard
9/90 TX
Applicability: Model SA226-AT, SA226-TC, SA227-AT and SA227-AC.
Requirement: 1. Install a placard on or adjacent to the passenger seat closest to the cabin window at Station 181. Where propeller rotation is:
1. CCW as viewed from the rear: the starboard seat.
b. CW as viewed from the rear: the port seat.
The placard is to be in clear view of the cabin occupants with lettering no smaller than 50 mm in height and shall read:
`DO NOT OCCUPY THIS SEAT AT ANY TIME'.
2. Modify the relevant window installation in accordance with Fairchild SBs 227-56- 004 or 226-56-004 as applicable. This removes the Para 1 requirement.
Note: FAA AD 90-12-14 initial reference.
Compliance: 1. Prior to further flight after 28 June 1990.
2. Prior to 31 July 1990.
Background: There have been reports overseas of the second window on the right hand side being damaged by ice shed from the propeller blades. In two cases the windows failed resulting in rapid decompression. Amendment 1 is due to the Authority being made aware of the existence of differing propeller rotation in various engine installations. This would then put the port window at risk rather than the starboard item.
