COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 106 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.
CFM International Turbine Engines – CFM 56 Series
AD/CFM 56/18 Engine Starter 8/2001
Applicability: CFM International (CFMI) CFM56-5, CFM56-5B, CFM56-5C series engines. Requirement: Replace the engine starter magnetic plug according to accomplishment instructions of CFMI Service Bulletin (SB) CFM56-5 80-014, Revision 2, dated 17 November 2000 or SB CFM56-5B 80-006, Revision 2, dated 21 November 2000 or SB CFM56-5C 80-009 Revision 2 dated 21 November 2000, as applicable.
Note 1: DGAC AD 2001–177(B) refers.
Note 2: Compliance with earlier versions of the SBs satisfy the intent of this Directive.
Compliance: Unless already accomplished, no later than the second 'A' check or within 6 months from the date of this Directive, whichever occurs first.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 9 August 2001.
Background: This Directive is prompted by failure of the starters due to the overtorque of the magnetic plug. The overtorque results in failure of the magnetic plug which permits the oil to drain from the starter housing. This results in substantial damage to the starter and may lead to engine and/or fan cowl damage. Replacement of the magnetic plug assembly along with proper torque should reduce the potential for oil loss from the engine starter.
