COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 106 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES
CFM International Turbine Engines - CFM56 Series
AD/CFM56/5 High Pressure Compressor 1-2 Spool 5/95
Applicability: All CFM56-5-A Series engines incorporating No.3 bearing aft air/oil seal, P/N 1364M71G02.
Requirement: 1. Inspect affected engines in accordance with CFM56-5 Service Bulletin 72-440, Revision 1.
2. Replace No.3 bearing aft air/oil seal, P/N 1364M71G02, in accordance with CFM56-5 Service Bulletin 72-440, Revision 1.
Note: DGAC AD 94-272(B)R1 also refers.
Compliance: As detailed in the Requirement Document effective from 27 April 1995.
Background: It has been determined that a lack of running clearance may exist between the referenced stationary No.3 bearing aft air/oil seal and the stage 1 HPC disc bore. There is a potential for contact between the two parts in service which will result in rubbing/scratching of the disc bore forward corner. Such damage could lead to an uncontained failure of the disc.
