AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.
Bombardier (Canadair) CL-600 (Challenger) Series Aeroplanes
AD/CL-600/48 CVR/FDR Paint Stripping 2/2002
Applicability: Model CL-600-2B19 "Regional Jet" aircraft, Serial Numbers 7003 through 7573. Requirement: 1. Conduct a visual inspection of the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit
Voice Recorder (CVR) to determine if the dust covers have had a chemical agent resistant coating applied. Covers that have had a protective coating applied are identified through the markings detailed in the Accomplishment Instructions, Part A, of the applicable Bombardier Service Bulletins (SBs) listed below:
FDR SB 601R-31-026 dated 12 October 2001 CVR SB 601R-23-056 dated 12 October 2001
2. If the FDR and/or CVR cover(s) do/does not have a chemical resistant coating, comply with either Requirement 2.a. or 2.b. as follows:
1. Rework the dust cover(s) in accordance with the requirements of Accomplishment Instructions, Part B, of the applicable Bombardier SB(s) detailed in Requirement 1; or
b. Install new dust cover(s), which have the "CLR CTD" markings, in accordance with the requirements of the Accomplishment Instructions, Part C, of the applicable Bombardier SB(s) detailed Requirement 1.

Compliance: For Requirement 1 - Before 28 June 2003.
For Requirement 2 - Before 28 June 2003.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 21 February 2002.

Background: The environment within the aft equipment compartment has proven to be conducive to the stripping of the orange paint and the markings from the dust cover of both the FDR and the CVR. The distinctive colour and markings are essential features of this equipment.
