COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES Bombardier (Boeing Canada/De Havilland) DHC-8 Series Aeroplanes AD/DHC-8/45 Amdt 1 Passenger Compartment Lighting Wiring 4/99 Applicability: This directive is applicable to DHC-8, Models 102, 103 and 301 aeroplanes, serial numbers 002 through 010, 012 through 201, 203 through 209, 211 through 215, 217 through 220, 222 and 223, without Modification 8/1114 (1990 Interior - 100 Series) or Modification 8/1110 (1990 Interior - 300 Series). Requirement: 1. Incorporate de Havilland Modification 8/2158 (Lighting -Passenger Compartment - Installation of Teflon Spiral Wrap to Wiring of Ceiling and Sidewall Lights) in accordance with Bombardier Regional Aircraft Division Dash 8 Service Bulletin 8-33-35 dated 1 September 1995. 2. Inspect the lavatory lighting system wiring to determine if Teflon spiral wrap has been installed. If Teflon spiral wrap has been installed no further action is necessary, if Teflon spiral wrap is not installed, fit the spiral wrap in accordance with Bombardier Regional Aircraft Division Dash 8 Service Bulletin 8-33-35 revision B dated 25 September 1998. Note. Transport Canada Aviation AD CF-95-18 Rev 1 refers. Compliance: 1. Compliance remains unchanged as within 1000 hours time in service or six calendar months, whichever occurs first after 29 February 1996. 2. Within 1000 hours time in service or six calendar months, whichever occurs first after the effective date of this amendment. This Amendment becomes effective on 22 April 1999. Background: Transport Canada Aviation advises that operators have reported chafing of the electrical wiring at several locations of the cabin ceiling lighting system. This chafing may lead to shorting between the wires and aircraft structure causing smoke and the risk of fire. Actions specified by the original issue of this directive were designed to decrease the likelihood of these occurrences. This amendment is prompted by the issue of a revision to the original Canadian directive following evidence that the rework requirements may have been misinterpreted. The misinterpretation could have resulted in the lavatory wiring not being protected by Teflon spiral wrap. The original issue of this amendment Airworthiness Directive became effective on 29 February 1996.
