COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section. Bombardier (Boeing Canada/de Havilland) DHC-8 Series Aeroplanes AD/DHC-8/87 Overhead Bins Electric al Connectors 8/2002 Applicability: DHC-8 Series 300, Models 301, 311, 314 and 315 aeroplanes, serial numbers 100, and 202 through 433, excluding 271 and 408. Requirement: If not previously accomplished, install de Havilland Modification 8/2924 (Lighting - Replacement of Connectors and Addition of Wiring at Forward Overhead Bins) in accordance with de Havilland Alert Service Bulletin A8-33-39 Rev. A dated 24 October 1997. Previous installations of modification 8/2924 in accordance with the basic issue of Service Bulletin A8-33-39, satisfy the requirements of this Directive. Note: Transport Canada AD CF-97-17 refers. Compliance: Within 400 hours time in service after the effective date of this Directive. This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 8 August 2002. Background: Transport Canada has advised that there have been two reports of severe overheating of overhead bin connectors at the forward end of the passenger compartment on DHC-8 Series 300 aeroplanes fitted with the Heath Techna interior. An electrical burning smell and smoke may result from the overheating of the connectors.
