COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES
Embraer EMB-120 (Brasilia) Series Aeroplanes
AD/EMB-120/19 Amdt 1
Ice Detector System 5/98
Applicability: EMB 120 Brasilia aeroplanes serial numbers 120003 through 120339 inclusive.
Requirement: Install an ice detector system in accordance with Embraer Service Bulletin 120-30-0027 Revision 2 dated 3 December 1997.
Note 1: DAC (Brazil) AD 97-06-03R1 Amdt 39-821 refers.
Note 2: Incorporation of an ice detector system in accordance with previous issues of SB 120-30-0027 does not constitute compliance with this airworthiness directive.
Note 3: Revision 22 to the approved flight manual (AFM 120/1017) is complimentary to this airworthiness directive.
Compliance: Prior to 1 September 1998.
This amendment becomes effective on 23 April 1998.
Background: The Brazilian Departmento de Aviação Civil (DAC) has determined that a potential hazard (performance degradation) exists during unexpected icing encounters if the anti icing is not activated, due to either pilot unawareness or misjudgement, or if the icing conditions are so severe that the operation falls outside the certification limits. Severe icing is conducive to the formation of an ice build-up on protected surfaces which exceed the capability of the anti-ice system. Installation of an ice detection system is intended to ensure that aircrew is warned of significant ice accretion in time to take appropriate action before the formation of ice results in reduced controllability of the aeroplane.
This amendment introduces a revision to the service bulletin and extends the compliance time by three months.
The original issue of this airworthiness directive became effective on 6 November 1997.
