COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES Gulfstream (Grumman) G1159 and G-IV Series Aeroplanes AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section. AD/G1159/38 Electrical Power - Alternator Feeder Cable 7/2000 Applicability: Model G-IV series aeroplanes, serial numbers 1000 through 1404 inclusive. Requirement: Modify the engine alternator feeder cables in accordance with Gulfstream IV Customer Bulletin No. 112, dated 15 February 2000, and Gulfstream IV Aircraft Service Change (ASC) No. 410, dated 11 February 2000 as follows: 1. For aeroplanes having serial numbers 1000 through 1384 inclusive - Accomplish sub paragraphs a.(i) and a.(ii) of this Directive for the left and right engines, in accordance with Paragraphs B. and C. of the Modification Instructions of the ASC. (i) Replace the alternator power feeder cables with new cables, and reroute the cables. (ii) Install additional brackets and clamps. b. For aeroplanes having serial numbers 1385 through 1404 inclusive - Accomplish sub paragraphs b.(i) and b.(ii) of this Directive on the right engine in accordance with paragraph D. of the Modification Instructions of the ASC. (i) Install a bracket and spacer. (ii) Reroute the alternator feeder cables. Note 1: On some aeroplanes, some of the actions described in the aircraft service change were accomplished prior to the effective date of this Directive. On these aeroplanes, these actions are not required to be repeated. However, any action described in the aircraft service change that has not been accomplished on these aeroplanes must be accomplished in accordance with this requirement. This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 13 July 2000. Background: The United States Federal Aviation Administration has advised of an incident of an in-flight engine fire on a Model G-IV series aeroplane due to chafing of the power feeder cable assembly of an engine alternator. This Directive introduces actions intended to prevent interference and chafing between the alternator power feeder cables and adjacent structure, which could result in an electrical short circuit and consequent fire ignition source in the engine compartment.
