AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Looms and Fuel Cross-Feed Drains

Applicability: All HS.748 series aeroplanes.
Requirement: 1. Remove the fuel cross-feed drain stub pipe assemblies, together with the drain valve securing brackets, in the port and starboard wing dry bays and install a blanking caps on the fuel cross-feed pipe stubs in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of BAe Systems Service Bulletin (SB) HS 748-28- 045 dated 12 February 2003.
2. Inspect the electrical cable looms in the port and starboard wing dry bays for chafe damage in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions SB HS 748- 28-045 and, if necessary, replace any damaged electrical wires, secure the loom and ensure that the looms are protected.
Note: SB HS 748-28-045 has been classified as Mandatory by the CAA(UK).
Compliance: For Requirement 1 - Before 12 February 2004.
For Requirement 2 - Before further flight immediately following accomplishment of Requirement 1.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 12 June 2003.
Background: BAe Systems have received a report from an ATP operator of a fire in the dry bay area of the wing, which was attributed to chafing damage between electrical cables and the fuel cross- feed drain stub pipe assembly.

As this may also occur in HS 748 series aeroplanes, this Directive requires the removal of the fuel cross- feed drain stub pipe assemblies, inspection of the electrical looms and, if necessary, rectification action.
