COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 106 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES Pratt and Whitney Turbine Engines - JT9D Series AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section. AD/JT9D/33 Diffuser Case Inspection 8/2000 Applicability: Pratt and Whitney JT9D-3A, -7, -7H, -7A, -7AH, -7F, -7J, -20 and -20J turbofan engines. Requirement: Inspect and replace as necessary diffuser cases that do not comply with the technical requirements of FAA AD 93-19-02 R1 amendment 39-9038. Note: P&W Alert SB No 6076 R1, P&W SB No 5591 R7 and 5591 R4 refers. Compliance: As detailed in the Requirement Document with a revised effective date of this Directive. This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 10 August 2000. Background: This Directive raised to inspect diffuser cases for cracking, and also reduces the crack length allowed before removal of the diffuser case is required. Such cracks could result in an uncontained engine failure and damage to the aircraft.
