AD/LYC/108 - Crankshaft Material Inspection (Cth)

AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Applicability: 1. Textron Lycoming TIO-540 and LTIO-540 series engines with a rated take-off power of 300 horsepower or greater; and

2. Textron Lycoming IO-540 series engines modified by a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) listed in Table 1 of this directive, regardless of the rated horsepower

Note 1: Applicable IO-540 powered aircraft include the Ted Smith/Piper PA-60 601 and 601P models.

Requirement: 1. Textron Lycoming TIO-540 and LTIO-540 series engines with a rated take-off power of 300 horsepower or greater and listed by serial number in Table 2 of this directive:

1. A CAR 42ZC (6) authorised representative of Textron Lycoming to obtain a sample of the crankshaft material for the purpose of metallurgical evaluation in accordance with Textron Lycoming Mandatory Service Bulletin (MSB) 553; and

2. Following compliance with Requirement 1a of this Directive; applicable engines may only be returned to service following receipt of Textron Lycoming documented evidence that confirms the material sample was found not to exhibit any metallurgical anomalies; and
