AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

AD/CONVAIR/6 Elevator Outer Torque Tube Assembly 5/2006
Applicability: All model 340 and 440, and all such model aircraft converted to turbopropeller power.
Requirement: Perform a visual inspection of both left and right hand elevator outer torque tube assembly part number 340-3540304 attachment to flange part number 240-3540320 for evidence of loose or sheared rivets, in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of paragraph 2 of General Dynamics Convair Division Service Bulletin 640 (340D) 27-6.
If any loose or sheared rivets in the elevator torque tube to flange attachment are found, replace all rivets with interference fitting steel fasteners in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of paragraph 2 of Service Bulletin 640 (340D) 27-6.
Note: FAA AD 81-22-02 Amdt 39-4236 refers.
Compliance: Within 700 hours time in service after 11 May 2006, and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 700 hours time in service.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 11 May 2006.
Background: The FAA received reports of loose aluminium rivets on the elevator torque tube at the flange attachment. This condition could result in sheared rivets and potential loss of elevator control.
