AD/JETSTREAM/105 - Nose Landing Gear Wheel Outer Cone (Cth)

AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

British Aerospace BAe 3100 (Jetstream) Series Aeroplanes AD/JETSTREAM/105 Nose Landing Gear Wheel Outer Cone 4/2008

Applicability: All Model Jetstream Series 3100 and 3200 aircraft, all serial numbers. Requirement: Action in accordance with the requirements of EASA AD 2008-0037.

Compliance: As specified in the Requirement document, with a revised effective date of 10 April 2008. This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 10 April 2008. Background: A failure mode has been identified following the examination of parts from a Jetstream 4100 Series aircraft, that can lead to the loss of a nose wheel. Jetstream Series 3100 and 3200 aircraft use a similar method of retaining the wheel assemblies on the NLG axle. A combination of excessive wear and/or adverse tolerances on the axle inner cone, outer cone or wheel hub splined sleeve cones results in the loss of the critical gap between the inner flange face of the wheel outer cone and the axle end face. This condition, if not corrected, can cause the wheel nut lock plate to break, leading to the wheel retention nut unscrewing and subsequent separation of the nose wheel from the NLG axle.
