The Parliament of Queensland enacts—

Short title 1. This Act may be cited as the School Uniform Act 1999.

Act amended 2. This Act amends the Education (General Provisions) Act 1989.

Insertion of new s 26A 3. Part 3, after section 26— insert—

"Dress code

'26A.(1) The principal of a State school may make a dress code for the school's students.

'(2) The dress code may include provision about the wearing of uniforms by the students while they are attending or representing the school.

(3) Before making the dress code, the principal must undertake the consultation prescribed under a regulation with the school's staff, parents and students.

"(4) The dress code has no effect until it is approved by the chief executive.

"(5) In deciding whether to approve a dress code, the chief executive must consider the matters prescribed under a regulation.'.

Amendment of s 152 (Regulation-making power) 4. Section 152(2)—

'(ba)the making of a dress code under section 26A,! including—

(i) consultation about a proposed dress code; and

(11) matters that must be considered when deciding a dress code; and

(ili) provision in a dress code for exemptions from, or modifications to, its requirements; and

(iv) sanctions that may be applied for contravening a dress code; and

(v) other matters that may, or may not, be included in a dress code; and

(vi) matters for consideration by the chief executive in deciding whether to approve a dress code; and
