COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY
SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES
Bombardier (Canadair) CL-600 (Challenger) Series Aeroplanes
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.
AD/CL-600/46 Main Windshield Fasteners 13/2001
Applicability: Model CL-600-2B19 aircraft, serial numbers 7003 and subsequent, which are equipped with windshield part numbers 601R33033-1, -2, -5, -6, -9, and -10, and which have accumulated less than 2,500 flight cycles.
Requirement: Accomplish the following in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of Bombardier Service Bulletin 601R-56-004, dated 16 August 2001.
1. Inspect the aft edge of the left and right main windshields to determine whether part number CSB-NP-139321-002-1 placard is installed.
For windshields equipped with this placard, no further action is required.
2. Any windshield not equipped with a placard per Requirement 1 must be modified by replacing nine of the existing hi-lok pins installed in the lower forward corner of the windshield, with reduced shank diameter hi-lok pins.
Note 1: It has been determined that the risk of windshield failure is higher for windshields with low flight cycles. Therefore, Transport Canada recommends first accomplishment on windshields with the least number of flight cycles.
Note 2: Transport Canada AD CF-2001-35R1 refers.
Compliance: Before 31 October 2002, unless already accomplished.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 27 December 2001.
COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY
SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES
Background: The manufacturer has received numerous reports of cracked windshields. An examination of cracked windshields has shown that most failures are caused by stress concentration at the windshield's lower forward corner. Analysis and testing has shown that the stress concentration can be reduced, and the windshield service life can be improved by the installation of reduced shank fasteners in the windshield's lower forward corner.

Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority 14 November 2001
The above AD is notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 5 December 2001.
